Performance. 2012, a contemporary painting by Vilik Zakaryan

“Performance” is Zakaryan’s rethinking of a traditional allegory painting. The woman playing cello personifies the act of musical performance. She’s the modern Euterpe, an ancient Greek muse, who travelled through ages and embodied herself in the modern world. The artist followed the old masters and pictured the allegorical character among specific symbols. In the background cells, which are often seen in Zakaryan’s work, the viewer can spot different references both to the art music and to the Armenian cultural background – a human ear, which can be also interpreted as foetus, Yerevan Opera House, an hourglass and a coin with the effigy of the ancient Armenian king Tigran the Great.
